  Carpometacarpal Joint Injuries  
 
 
Anatomy:

The Carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is the joint of the extension of the thumb to the wrist. The opposing joint surfaces are saddle shaped to allow more movement: flexion/extension, abduction/ adduction, axial rotation.

Mechanism of Injury:
  • Generally due to forced hyperextension and abduction of the first CMC joint.
Symptoms
  • Pain with thumb movements.
  • Tenderness over the CMC joint.
  • Impaired mobility of the thumb.
  • There may be a joint deformity.
