Floorball is a versatile indoor team sport played in the confines of a 'rink' with five field players and a goalkeeper in each team. Floorball mixes elements of indoor and ice hockey and matches are played in three twenty-minute periods. Played by over 2 million people world wide, Floorball gained full IOC recognition in 2011, which is also the same year I commenced playing. Having played hockey since age 5 I was looking for an alternative sport in the off-season apart from indoor hockey. Since finding Floorball in 2011, I have been a member of the Australian Women's Floorball Team in which I have competed at three World Floorball Championships in Switzerland (2011), Czech Republic (2013) and most recently in Finland in December 2015. The team is currently ranked 12th in the world and will be looking to qualify for the 11th World Floorball Championships in Slovakia in 2017. I have also represented Australia in Indoor Hockey and also currently in the Australian 35’s Hockey Team.
Value to the Individual
Not only am I an accomplished and dedicated athlete in both Floorball and Hockey but I also enjoy giving back to both sports through coaching, mentoring and volunteering. I am currently coaching the Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club in Brisbane division 2 competition and am an active member for the Queensland Floorball Association, coaching juniors and the women’s team and also promoting the sport of Floorball in the community. In 2015 I was awarded a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ from Floorball Australia for my work in the sport across Australia and was chosen to be an ambassador for 50 Sports in 50 Weeks, promoting Floorball and aiming to get the world off the couch. Sport has played a huge part in my life and taught me lifelong skills which I hope to be able to pass on to future generation in each sport.
Why the funds are needed
Over the last 5 years whilst being a member of the Australian Women's Floorball team, I have solely funded myself to tournaments and training camps across the world and Australia in a bid to wear the green and gold. With no sponsors players fund themselves to compete at the highest level including flights, accommodation and uniforms costs whilst also covering the costs of coaching and medical staff. I have been fortunate over the last 5 months to be a dual international player having represented Australia at the World Floorball Championships in Finland in December 2015 and in April 2016 travelled to the Hawkes Bay Hockey Festival in New Zealand as a member of the Australian 35s Hockey Team. Over the last 5 months I have solely funded myself to both tournaments totaling over $10,000. The Thermoskin Community Sports Fund would go a long way in assisting me pay off these tours and for me to continue my domestic and international career in 2016/17 in both Floorball and Hockey.
