Dragon City Derby Dolls (established in 2008) is Bendigo's thriving roller derby league of 42 members. With members ranging in age from 17 to 47, the league draws from a huge area of regional Victoria, with some members travelling 50- 100km each way to train! DCDD supports skating and non-skating members to train, officiate and compete in home games and in state & national competitions. Our motto, as chosen by our members, is “Inclusive. Challenging. Fun.” and we make sure that is what we live and skate by. Our travel team, the Chiko Rollers, is everyone's favourite team to play, renowned for embodying the spirit of roller derby in a fun and sporting way, whilst also being highly competitive. That's why we were the winners of the inaugural Statewide Stampede Best & Fairest overall team award, as voted by participating leagues, in 2015.
Value to the Community
“Inclusive, challenging, fun” really is at the heart of everything we do. DCDD offers the north-west region the chance to participate in the fast-growing, empowering sport of roller derby. Our league provides a safe space for women of any age, orientation and body shape to become strong & skilled physically and mentally, within a supportive network like no other. We are proud to be part of the 'Fair Go, Sport!' initiative of the Human Rights Commission, with Skate Victoria, promoting sexual and gender diversity. Participation in the league gives unparalleled opportunities for women's leadership and for being powerful role models to our peers and families, in terms of fun, fitness and fearlessness. We also love being a part of our local Bendigo community, participating in the iconic Bendigo Easter Parade, raising money for local charities, and collecting for another inspiring women's initiative, 'Share the Dignity'.
Why the funds are needed
The Great Southern Slam (TGSS) held on June 11-13 in Adelaide is a competition involving roller derby leagues from all over Australia and New Zealand. This year is the biggest competition yet, with 48 teams accepted out of 63 EOIs... and the Chiko Rollers were one of them. And we're not just in – we're in Division 1 for the very first time! After placing 2nd in both the first Statewide Stampede and in interstate competition at the Bendigo Rebellion in 2015, we want to test our mettle in a national/ international competition like this one. We have the largest number of bouting skaters in the team's history and hope to take a full roster of skaters plus our support crew (Bench Coaches & Managers, officials and cheer squad) on the road to Adelaide to face off against the best in Australian roller derby. Please help our Chikos roll into TGSS by subsidising transport & accommodation costs – a Thermoskin grant would go a long way, with our other fundraising, towards the huge amount required to get 22 of us across the border and ready to give the comp their all!
