About Dicky Beach SLSC - Champion Lifesaver Surf Rescue Team

The Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club (DBSLSC) Champion Lifesaver Surf Rescue Team is comprised of high performing individuals who complete in individual and team events, which demonstrate physical and knowledge skills required of a lifesaver. The current (2015/16) team has 20 members aged 13 to 25 years. Each season the team competes in the Champion Lifesaver (Individual), First Aid Competition (2 person) and Patrol Competition (4-6 person) events at surf sport carnivals commencing with the Sunshine Coast Branch Championships. Following qualification, the team can then progress to the State Championships and the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. The calibre of our team is such that members have consistently represented DBSLSC at the Australian Championships. Members of the Champion Lifesaver Surf Rescue team are proficient holders of the Bronze Medallion and Advanced Resuscitation Certificate, competent athletes and have a sound understanding of the SLSA Training Manual and resuscitation techniques.

Value to the Community

DBSLSC youth members are the future leaders of the Dicky Beach/Caloundra community. The Champion Lifesaver Surf Rescue Team is comprised of upstanding young people who are a credit to the local area and demonstrate knowledge and maturity well beyond their years. The Champion Lifesaver Surf Rescue Team provides an opportunity for members to participate in and enjoy lifesaving and surf sports and encourages long-term active participation in lifesaving activities and community service. Team development has a strong focus on surf safety skills, advanced first aid and personal sporting achievements. Coaches provide continued learning and support for young people to help them become capable patrolling lifesavers, skilful competitors as well as respected members of the local and wider community. The training the team receives results in highly qualified lifesavers with skills that can be applied in medical emergencies in the community, both on and off the beach.

Why the funds are needed

The DBSLSC Champion Lifesaver Surf Rescue Team seeks the assistance of the Thermoskin Community Sports Fund to purchase high quality fibreglass lifesaving fins for training and competition purposes. Fibreglass fins enable maximum speed and water redirection efficiency during rescue tube racing. At present our team has only one pair of high performance fins which are becoming worn and are not suited to a number of team members due to their size. Consequently our team is at a competitive disadvantage compared with teams from other clubs that are better resourced. Ideally we would like to obtain an additional five pairs of fins in various sizes that can be shared by current and future team members. The fins we seek to purchase are produced in Europe by ‘Special Fins’ (specialfins.com) and are approved by the International Lifesaving Federation. Unfortunately there is no comparable product available in Australia. The cost is approximately $215 per pair including a carry bag and neoprene socks to protect feet and make the fins more comfortable to wear. Shipping is estimated at approximately $120.
