About Noarlunga Figure Skating Club

We are a club of approximately 40 members that started approx 14 years ago. We are a community that supports and promotes figure skating for all ages and abilities. We run an Aussie skate program for junior skaters and provide ice time and promote coaches for all skaters. We have had teams and skaters compete at national and international level resulting in some Australian champions and overseas team medals. All of this is acheived with our skaters practising on a smaller than usual ice surface. We provide opportunities for fun social times, run competitions and raise funds to support our skaters. Our skaters have opportunities to perform in the Disney on Ice pre show and in the annual winter wonderland shows at Glenelg.

Value to the Community

We provide the southern area with a sport that increases the diversity of sporting opportunities for children to be engaged in. They can be active in learning new skills, setting goals and achieving them, making friends and working with others. We provide both competitive and performance opportunities through competitions and through involvement in Disney On Ice Pre shows , Winter Wonderland Shows and Christmas concerts or demonstrations. Our junior coaches are also some of our skaters who support encourage and inspire the younger members and set good examples of good sportsmanship and leadership.

Why the funds are needed

We would use this grant to purchase a pole harness. This equipment is used by the coach to help the skater to work towards the height and rotation they need in their skating jumps. The skater is strapped into a harness attached to a pole which the coach holds. As the skater jumps the coach is able to give the skater the extra lift they need in order to rotate further. This is important as the skaters progress to jumps that require 1 and a half to two or three rotations. We are unable to have a harness that is fixed at the rink as we do not own a rink and the coaches could use it wherever our members train. We feel this equipment will help a wide range of our members achieve the confidence they need to achieve these jumps. Skaters are a brave and fearless bunch in many ways but despite padding fear can take over sometimes. There is nothing greater than seeing a child achieve something they have worked hard for and that's what we want to achieve with this harness.
