About Sophie Petterson

Sophie has been competing at Nationals events since she was 8 years old. She represented NSW in freeskate at her first Nationals. Since then she has been selected to represent NSW in figures, freeskate, dance, CSD, freedance and open short freeskate each year. Last year Sophie placed 3rd in solo dance, 2nd Juvenile freeskate and the top 5 of all her other events. Sophie has been able to achieve all of this even after being diagnosed with osgood schlatters which regularly causes her pain. Each year in order to be selected for the National team she puts in hours of training each week and competes regularly at club comps. Travel to interstate events is expensive, as is dresses for each event to compete in and club and state tracksuits.

Value to the Individual

Skating is a love, passion, it is Sophie's life. She spends countless hours at the rink training and making friends. Skating has been a huge part of Sophie's life I don't know what she would do without it. It not only keeps her fit and healthy but gives her coping skills which she can use in other parts of her life. She has learnt that you can't always win, and when you don't win you need to be a good sportswoman and not a bad sport. Skating has also given Sophie a lot of different friends from various places around Australia.
