Southern Athletic Club was established in 1989 and is open to athletes of all ages and abilities, providing the means for members to train and compete in a supportive and enjoyable environment. In the 2015/2016 summer season we had around 50 members competing in track & field and recreational running events. Southern Athletic Club currently has a particularly active and strong junior contingent and, with links to Little Athletics centres across the Southern Adelaide Metro and Fleurieu Peninsula areas, we encourage and assist with the pathway from Little Aths to regular competition at Athletics SA to ensure that young athletes stay active and involved in the sport. Southern Athletic Club has a number of qualified, experienced and motivated coaches who are able to work with athletes across a range of disciplines to help them realise their full potential.
Value to the Community
Southern AC provides the facilities and support to enable any budding athletes to train and compete in track and field regardless of their ability, age, gender, ethnicity or social background. We are proud to contribute to the physical health of our members and to provide them with the opportunity to participate in such worthwhile activities. Our members set an example of the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle within their schools and our community
Why the funds are needed
We are looking to establish a new Junior Development Group that offers structured training sessions to junior athletes looking to access the sport for the first time or to progress from their school sports program or Little Athletics centres. The group will be open to kids aged 11+ and training will be led by our qualified, multi-disciplined coaches. At Southern Athletic Club we value participation, discipline, enjoyment and personal improvement. Having an athletics focus, the Junior Development Group will introduce kids to essential training principles and will provide the opportunity for young athletes to develop their fitness and technical abilities We will foster an inclusive, social and supportive environment that encourages healthy, active and fun lifestyles for the junior members of our community. To deliver this we require a financial injection to buy essential equipment, such as cones, hurdles, shot puts, discus, etc., and uniforms to give the athletes suitable clothing to train in (including sun safe hats) which will also foster a sense of belonging and "team". To successfully publicise the Junior Development Group to all schools and community organisations in our area we will need to produce professional standard posters and flyers, banners and flags.
