Special Olympics provides competition and training for children and adults with an intellectual disability. The Melbourne Southern Club have been operating for the last 28 years and our members location range from Edithvale Rd to Oakleigh running bayside to the city. Training is run at Don Tatnell Pool in Mordialloc. There are currently 23 Swimmers but our club has a total of 79 athletes as we offer 6 sports in total. Special olympics offers competition at the regional, state and world levels.
Value to the Community
Special Olympics Australia aims to improve the quality of life, acceptance and health of people with an intellectual disability by engaging the community to accept and support all its members equally and offering activities that involve not only the athlete but also volunteers and the community. Our goals include a holistic approach to individual wellbeing and inclusion of the broader community.
Why the funds are needed
We would like to give all our athletes a Swimmers Jacket each. These jackets are long, fully lined ones especially made for swimmers to keep them warm and dry between races. We would love to get them in our team colours with our logo on. This would make us look more like a team. We believe there will also be many heath benefits and they would be very handy for training and for competition.
