About Terrigal Surf Life Saving - Board & Ski Team

Terrigal SLS's Board & Ski team currently consists of members from 14 years of age. Terrigal SLS was established on the Central Coast of NSW in 1925 (year is currently under debate with some now saying much earlier). All members must perform voluntary patrols on our local beaches each year in order to qualify to compete. At the recent Australian SLS Championships 29 competitors travelled from the Central Coast of NSW to Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland to compete, together with their families. In addition to this 3 trailers were towed with various equipment ranging from Boards, Skis, Tubes and even a fully equipped Inflatable Rescue Boat. Most of these competitors have travelled far and wide across the East Coast of Australia this year proudly representing our club. We were also fortunate to have some involved in International Competition.

Value to the Community

As mentioned above, those that are involved in Surf Life Saving Competition must perform voluntary patrols our local beaches. Most do in excess of their compulsory 25 hours a year and to be honest without these people looking out for everyone's welfare on all patrolled beaches around Australia there would be a lot more lives lost. Surf Life Saving Australia has many statistics that support this. Terrigal SLS also proudly supports the community in many other ways - volunteering first aid skills at the local marathon & sporting events. Helping support local community events - ANZAC day, Christmas Carols and the Community in general. Surf Life Saving is a non for profit organisation.

Why the funds are needed

Our Board & Ski team consists of members from the age of 14 with the majority aged between 16 and 20 years of age. Most of these are School or University aged competitors - with little or no personal income. All have to pay yearly membership fees, carnival competition fees, purchase their own equipment and travel in order to compete in competitions. For the past 5 or so years we have been without "sponsorship" and the first thing to go was uniforms and extra equipment. Those that could afford it have purchased TShirts & Hoodies themselves in order to achieve a team vibe. There is currently talk of purchasing just a badge for them to sew onto their own clothing (again reducing their individual costs) A team uniform would be purchased. We are also in need of some new adjustable training skis to be able to be used by new comers to the club so they can see if they enjoy the sport before purchasing their own equipment. A new ski can be in the vicinity of $3000
