About University of Canberra Ginninderra Athletics Club

UC Ginninderra Athletics Club (the Tigers) is a partnership between our Little Athletics Club and UC Life to assist in the transition of athletes from Little Aths through to Senior Athletics. Our sport suffers a significant drop off after the Under 12 age group. The Tigers in recent years have turned this around and we now have 480 combined members - the largest competitive athletics club in Canberra. We are the only club in the ACT with membership from Kindergarten to University and beyond (3 to 70 years at present). The club was formed in 1976 in Belconnen (ACT) and this coming season is our 40th year. With the significant growth in numbers, doubling in the last 5 years, our infrastructure and equipment is pushed to the limits every week this has led us to become innovators and creative in our sports product. Our athletes have prospered as a result.

Value to the Community

The Tigers are the only Athletics ACT club based in the Belconnen town centre, a population of 100,000 people. We provide a weekly social community athletics competition from our grass oval. Our Youngest athletes (Tiny Tots to Under 8s) are mentored by our senior athletes as "Junior Coaches" a unique program aimed at athlete retention, leadership opportunities and knowledge transfer. Our seniors are given the choice of competing in the social competition or also visiting the AACT Interclub for more serious competition. We are the only ACT club that provides our own Intraclub competition for improved inclusion, fun and fitness. Older athletes and those in the Under 13 - 17 choose to do each others events in order to get more of their favourite discipline each week. This unique age group overlap with the Open athletes too increases participation and membership, building on years of competing as a Junior Athlete.

Why the funds are needed

Our Business Plan called "Sport for Life" has all the details on how the funds will be spent/used. Our Inventory List (the things we need to buy) is those items only required for an Under 20 or Open Athlete such as 7.26kg Shot Put, 2kg Discus, 800gm Javelin, 6kg Hammer, 108cm Hurdles, 60cm High Jump Mats and a Shipping Container to store all our senior gear. We also need new Shade Shelters (tents) preferably branded.
