We are team of 15 skaters who training 3 times a weeks, at 3 different locations in Perth. The league staring in 2009 with the A/representative team starting in 2011. Since then, we have completed at multiple tournaments, recently winning Tier 2 at Royal Rumble. At WARD, we welcome people who have and haven't skated before and teach them about safety and injury prevention. We also give our 'fresh meat' the skills need to one day play roller derby. The training process takes on average about 12 months.
Value to the Community
We represent women from all walks of life and embody athleticism, inclusivity and sportswomanship. Roller Derby is unique as it is primarily a women dominated sport and focuses on empowering women. We are members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and the governing philosophy is “by the skaters, for the skaters.” Female skaters are primary owners, managers, and/or operators of each member league and of the association. Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
Why the funds are needed
The funds will be put towards travel expenses for the 2016, which totals around $40,000 a year. June this year, we will be travelling the The Great Southern Slam in Adelaide to represent WARD in a tournament that consists of over 50 other leagues. We are currently ranked 10th out of those 50 leagues. Being in Perth, we are very isolated and find it hard to maintain our high ranking. TGSS provides a great opportunity to continue our representation. The funds are for flight, accommodation and transport ONLY. Money will not used for food or beverages.
